Zimbabwe has begun moving more than 2,500 wild animals from a southern reserve to one in the country’s north to rescue them from drought, as the ravages of climate change replace poaching as the biggest threat to wildlife. “Project Rewild Zambezi,” as the operation is called, is moving the animals to an area in the Zambezi River valley to rebuild the wildlife populations there. Tinashe Farawo, spokesman for the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, says the lack of water has made it necessary to move wildlife as their current habitat has become parched by prolonged drought.

A top South Korean official says that China and Russia’s reluctance to toughen U.N. sanctions on North Korea is “the biggest challenge” facing international efforts to eliminate the North’s nuclear arsenal. Vice Defense Minister Shin Beomchul spoke with The Associated Press on Thursday ahead of a security forum being held in Seoul next week.  Shin says the U.S.-China strategic rivalry and U.S.-Russia tension over the Ukraine war mean it’s possible North Korea could test a nuclear device and not be punished for it by the U.N. Security Council. Shin said a lack of a condemnation at the U.N. Security Council would lead the North to believe it has moved closer toward becoming an acknowledged nuclear state.

A bill that would have blocked California state prisons from transferring inmates to federal immigration custody was failing as lawmakers prepared to adjourn. Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed similar legislation in 2019, and the measure was falling short of reaching him late Wednesday. State law prohibits local police and sheriffs from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for some crimes, but it doesn’t apply to the prison system. The practice drew new attention after inmate firefighters risked their lives but were turned over to ICE after their parole. Organizations representing police chiefs, sheriffs and rank-and-file officers opposed the legislation. The measure repeatedly fell short of what it needed to pass the Senate.
