German carrier Lufthansa says it is canceling almost all passenger and cargo flights Friday from its two biggest hubs, Frankfurt and Munich, due to a planned strike by pilots. A union representing Lufthansa pilots said early Thursday that they will stage a walk-out after demands for a pay increase were rejected by management. According to Lufthansa the company had offered a one-off increase of $900, amounting to a 5% increase for senior pilots and an 18% increase for those starting the profession. The union had called for a 5.5% raise this year and an automatic above-inflation increase in 2023. It said pilots are also seeking a new pay and holiday structure that the airline said would increase its staffing costs by about 40%.

The California Legislature was advancing Gov. Gavin Newsom’s blueprint to extend the lifespan of the state’s last operating nuclear power plant by up to five years. The vote represented a setback for environmentalists who wanted to state to abide by a 2016 agreement to close the Diablo Canyon Power Plant by 2025. Newsom warned California could face blackouts if the reactors were retired too soon, as the state transitions to renewables. But critics questioned the aging plant’s safety, which sits in a web of nearby earthquake faults. Other issues ranged from how ratepayers across the state might be impacted to storage of spent nuclear fuel.

California lawmakers have failed to replace limits on carrying concealed weapons that were struck down by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. A measure that would have enacted more than three dozen new restrictions failed by one vote early Thursday in the state Assembly. Sen. Anthony Portantino says that makes California less safe. He promised to try again when lawmakers reconvene in December. The Supreme Court in June overturned a New York law requiring that people seeking a license to carry a gun in public demonstrate a particular need. But Assembly members could not muster the two-thirds requirement to immediately impose new limits.

Pakistani health officials are reporting an outbreak of waterborne diseases in the flood-affected areas. Thursday’s announcement about the outbreak of waterborne diseases among flood victims came amid efforts aimed at ensuring the provision of clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people displaced by record-breaking floods, which have killed nearly 1,200 people, mostly women and children since mid-June. Over 90,000 diarrhea cases were reported from various parts of one of the worst floods-hit southern Sindh province in the past 24 hours, according to a report released by the health officials. The latest development comes a day after the World Health Organization raised concern over the spread of waterborne diseases among flood victims.

Zimbabwe has begun moving more than 2,500 wild animals from a southern reserve to one in the country’s north to rescue them from drought, as the ravages of climate change replace poaching as the biggest threat to wildlife. “Project Rewild Zambezi,” as the operation is called, is moving the animals to an area in the Zambezi River valley to rebuild the wildlife populations there. Tinashe Farawo, spokesman for the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, says the lack of water has made it necessary to move wildlife as their current habitat has become parched by prolonged drought.

The top legal counsel for Republican Gov. Bill Lee is taking over the state’s attorney general office. Earlier this year, the Tennessee Supreme Court announced that Jonathan Skrmetti would replace Attorney General Herbert Slatery, a Republican who announced in May that he wouldn’t seek another eight-year term. Tennessee is the only state in the U.S. where its Supreme Court appoints the attorney general. Prior to serving in Lee’s administration, Skrmetti worked as the attorney general’s chief deputy from 2018-2021. Skrmetti’s first day in office is Thursday.

Some 21 million people have been ordered to stay home in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu following a spike in COVID-19 cases. Flights have been suspended to and from the city that is a major transit hub in Sichuan province, as well as being its governmental and economic center. Under the rules, just one member of each family who can show a negative virus test within the past 24 hours is allowed out per day to buy necessities. Chengdu has reported more than 1,000 cases and no deaths from the latest round of domestic transmission, but the extreme measures reflect China’s rigid adherence to its “zero-COVID” policy that has exacted a major toll on the economy.

A top South Korean official says that China and Russia’s reluctance to toughen U.N. sanctions on North Korea is “the biggest challenge” facing international efforts to eliminate the North’s nuclear arsenal. Vice Defense Minister Shin Beomchul spoke with The Associated Press on Thursday ahead of a security forum being held in Seoul next week.  Shin says the U.S.-China strategic rivalry and U.S.-Russia tension over the Ukraine war mean it’s possible North Korea could test a nuclear device and not be punished for it by the U.N. Security Council. Shin said a lack of a condemnation at the U.N. Security Council would lead the North to believe it has moved closer toward becoming an acknowledged nuclear state.

A bill that would have blocked California state prisons from transferring inmates to federal immigration custody was failing as lawmakers prepared to adjourn. Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed similar legislation in 2019, and the measure was falling short of reaching him late Wednesday. State law prohibits local police and sheriffs from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for some crimes, but it doesn’t apply to the prison system. The practice drew new attention after inmate firefighters risked their lives but were turned over to ICE after their parole. Organizations representing police chiefs, sheriffs and rank-and-file officers opposed the legislation. The measure repeatedly fell short of what it needed to pass the Senate.

It’s the first day of school in Ukraine, but children won’t be sharing memories from their holidays. Their stories are of surviving war. For many, their last day of school was the day before the Feb. 24 Russian invasion of their country. After the first months of shock, 51% of schools in Ukraine, despite the risk, are reopening Thursday to in-person education, with an option to study online if the parents prefer. Attending school is one of the few things that can help children bring a sense of normality amid the war. But safety remains the priority. Schools that don’t have quick access to shelters or are located near active military zones will have online only study.

China has denounced a long-delayed U.N. report that was released over its protest and that says the government’s arbitrary detention of Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim ethnic groups in the western region of Xinjiang may constitute crimes against humanity. Human rights groups and the Japanese government welcomed the report, which had become caught up in a tug-of-war between China and others, who were critical of the delay and lobbying for its release. The assessment released late Wednesday by the U.N. human rights office in Geneva concluded that China has committed serious human rights violations under its anti-terrorism and anti-extremism policies.

Russia has launched weeklong war games that involve forces from China and other nations in a show of growing defense cooperation between Moscow and Beijing as they both face tensions with the U.S. The maneuvers are also intended to demonstrate that Moscow has a sufficient capability for massive drills even as its troops are engaged in military action in Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry says that the Vostok 2022 (East 2022) exercise will be held until Sept. 7 at seven firing ranges in Russia’s Far East and the Sea of Japan and involve more than 50,000 troops and over 5,000 weapons units, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships.
