The Super Bowl is arguably the USA’s largest sporting event.

Last year, according to Statista, 99.18 million people tuned in to watch the Los Angeles Rams emerge victorious over the Cincinnati Bengals with half-time performances from a plethora of big names.

Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar were all performing for one of the biggest shows ever.

As the event grows in popularity, the viewership naturally increases, but so does the advertising costs.

How much do adverts cost during the Super Bowl?

Recent figures show the growth in the cost of a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl and the numbers are crazy.

The cost of a 30-second Super Bowl ad in 1967 was a measly $42,500. By 1995, the cost hit the millions, with an ad averaging at $1.2 million, and by 2000, this climbed to $2 million.

Prices skyrocketed as viewership began to climb, hitting over $5.5 million in 2021.

For the 2023 Super Bowl, the price for the same length advert is now $7 million, meaning the charge for the ads have increased by nearly 165 times in 56 years.

Advertising during the Super Bowl is a coveted opportunity; only the largest name brands are able to scoop up these exclusive spots.

Advertisements have become iconic and well-recognised due to their quality, humour and lavish use of special effects. The use of celebrity cameos have become popular in this illusive advertising moment; a 2007 advert for CBS’s Late Show even featured Oprah Winfrey.

Last year’s Amazon advert featured Marvel’s Scarlett Johansson and SNL’s Colin Jost, whilst Booking.com featured Idris Elba.
