Russia’s famous tennis icon Maria Sharapova has always known to be a multi-faceted personality off the court. Besides being a dominant baseliner on a tennis field, Sharapova has long known for her business sense.

Ever since her retirement from professional tennis in February last year, the Russian has kept herself busy with upgrading her existing businesses and even became an investor for few startups. Recently, Sharapova decided to invest in Public, a social investing app/website.

Maria Sharapova holds a financial stake in investments app, Public

Public lets the customers buy and sell cryptocurrencies online. Sharapova talked to CNBC over her investment decision.

Since I was a very young girl, as a teenager, I made my first big paycheck by winning Wimbledon and to be honest, the financial investment space is one that’s very intimidating. I appreciate how Public is more user-friendly, and offers a simplified way to educate yourself to make investing less intimidating”.

Since its inception in 2017, Public has seen rapid growth with multiple famous personalities like Will Smith and JJ Watt (NFL player) have become part of their investors list.

Maria also reveals a personal reason for deciding to invest in Public.

One of the most important reasons of my investment into Public is the incredible stat that 40% of the audience on the Public app is female, which in this space, is almost unheard of”.

Sharapova’s business sense right from her playing days is always admired

Sharapova’s business instincts and her successful partnerships have made her become one of the key speakers at the Forbes Under 30 Summit held in October at Detroit.

During the event, the Russian reminded everyone that she always felt like there was much more to her life than just being called a tennis player.

When I come home after I exited the tennis gates, I felt like I was more. More as a human being. More as a person. I was curious, I was interested in other things. I didn’t want to be defined by this one thing”.

In fact, this is the drive that made Sharapova become an active businesswoman and establish a successful brand for herself with multiple investments to her name. The Russian is only growing from strength to strength as she explores various fields to put money into.
