The Premier League is consulting its lawyers after John Terry promoted non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with images of its trophy.
Terry, the former Chelsea and England captain, has been one of the main promoters of NFTs being sold by the “Ape Kids Club”. NFTs are digital images that are bought using cryptocurrencies and the purchase usually involves the buyers paying a transaction fee or “gas fee”, which can be more than £100.
The Premier League trophy is subject to a trademark agreement and it has not been licensed to be used to promote the NFTs. Ashley Cole, the former England defender, and the former Holland and Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong have also tweeted NFT images showing the trophy.
