The portal Sportico published Monday its list of the most valuable sports franchises in all professional sports in the United States by 2022. The list is topped by the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, with an estimated value of $7.64 billion.

This value is $630 million higher than MLB’s New York Yankees, which is in second place.

“This estimate was made using interviews with more than 30 bankers, lawyers, team executives, owners and consultants, as well as public documents related to the sport,” Sportico notes.

The value of NFL franchises in 2022

The study states that the total value of NFL franchises, including team-related businesses and owner-owned real estate, is $132 billion. While each franchise has an average value of $4.1 billion, which represents an 18% increase over last year.

It also details that the Denver Broncos were sold to the Walton-Penner family group for $4.65 billion. The sale is expected to be approved at the next owners’ meeting. This amount is a record for the purchase of a sports franchise in the United States.

In total, 16 of the NFL’s 32 franchises have an estimated value in excess of $4 billion. Outside of the NFL there are only three other teams that exceed this amount: four in the NBA and three in the MLB.

Teams such as the Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots have real estate developments and other businesses with which they managed to capitalize as the three most valuable teams in the NFL. The Cowboys founded the Legends company in partnership with the Yankees and have partnered with several NFL teams.

In fact, they are currently the first NFL team to strike a sponsorship deal with a cryptocurrency company, Blockchain.com.

The lowest valued team in the NFL is the runner-up Cincinnati Bengals, whose estimated value hovers around $2.84 billion.
